Make Time Work For You - Book Excerpt

We are our greatest companion. I talk to me constantly, sometimes i wish i would shut the f*** up, but most of the time I am a pretty good friend to me. Regardless, I have to forgive myself a lot, which I am okay with. The path that led me to this moment, and without giving the description justice, has been expansive. I have felt so low I could taste the ground, and so high that I moved in with the clouds.

Many of us value the time we still have. Those moments where you feel most alive. When you hold the hand of your child, who stares back at you thinking that you are invincible. The loss of someone we love, the thought that they are gone to soon. Perhaps the fact that I skipped the preface, because I think that prefaces are a waste of space. Proud, sad, happy. Emotions play a pivotal role in our perception of time.

Our emotions seem to be riding the hands of our daunting gear-stricken enemy, The clock. It is a tool that can haunt us whenever we are at work, or even when we are enjoying life's precious moments. Why is that? Are we callus enough to think that we are a victim of circumstance, placed here by some spiteful higher power? "I'm giving that poor sucker jury duty next week." -Spiteful Higher Power. Perhaps we still think that time is only affecting us. Perhaps we even think that the way we use our “own” time only affects us.....

.....Imagine emotions being taken out of your equation of time. Do you think that would encourage you, or do you feel like you would be drained? We are all unique and operate in different forms. Something we share, the desire to make ourselves better, for ourselves, for others, and for the world. There are no step by step guides to being the best you that you can be. That is because we are different. It is something that only you, and time, can teach you. Yes, you and time.....

....There seems to be a trend of inadequacy. No accomplishment, nor reward, or certification, or completion of project, and so on, will ever be enough. It is almost like we do not have time to relish in our victories. I am guilty of this on so many occasions, but what gets me the most, is my awareness of my guilt. Premeditated lack of fulfillment. Why must we feel unworthy of our own harvest? We must start these new seasons in our life for a reason, but then why do we skip out on the best part?

I have come to the conclusion that being content or happy is only achievable when you realize that forcefully being content or happy is never achievable. This idea truly makes sense when you actually arrive at the destination, and the thing about destinations is that you can come and go as you please.

We are not always supposed to be happy. Then happiness would suck. It would be like always climbing to the top of a roller coaster that never goes down. Being content, however, is organic. It bleeds from the highs and lows of our day to day lives, and carries over for months, years, and even lifetimes. You can’t fertilize your life with a Mercedes and expect everything else to be perfect from then on; wait until you need some maintenance.

I hope to take you on a journey where your time, and others, meet on common ground. Where you are no longer a victim to the constancy of seconds passing you by, or ticking away ever slower. We will learn to be mindful of the time we have left. We will learn not to feel guilty about being selfish with our own time. We will learn that greatness takes time. We will make time work for you.
